Salt Has Many Uses…Yet So Cheap!
Mixed with water salt can be used as a health and beauty aid, a wonder in the kitchen, along with many other simple uses such as a cleaning agent or a deodorizer.
Most of us think of it as just a seasoning to make our food taste better. However, there are really over 14,000 uses that we wouldn’t even begin to think of. Something so simple, so cheap and very valuable!
Salt usage dates all the way back to Biblical times. The word in Latin is salarium, which the word salary comes from. Roman soldiers were paid their wages, or salary, in blocks of salt. It was considered valuable because of it ability to preserve their food.
As mentioned before salt and water can be used as a health and beauty aid, a cleaning agent in the kitchen, and a deodorizer along with many other uses.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the many uses or home remedies:
Kitchen Uses
- Add salt to a salad to keep the lettuce crisp
- After peeling fruit, place it in mildly salted water to prevent it from turning brown
- When boiling eggs add salt to the boiling water to keep the eggs from cracking and they will peel easier
- A pinch makes egg whites fluffier when making meringue
- Soaking wilted apples in water with a little will perk them up
- A dash of salt in tea and coffee before brewing will enhance the flavors
- Add a little to a gallon of milk to keep it fresh longer
Cleaning Uses
- Odors from drains will be removed when pouring hot, strong salty water down them.
- Greasy pans come clean with a little salt and water mixed to make a paste.
- It's great to remove coffee stains from glass coffee pots.
- Remove rust from household tools by using salt and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and rub with a dry towel.
- Mixed with turpentine it will whiten your tub and toilet bowl.
- Clean copper, pewter, and brass with a paste made of vinegar and salt. Thicken with flour if necessary. It will also clean piano keys.
- If liquid from pies bubbles over in the oven sprinkle salt on the spill to prevent it from smelling. It will bake dry for easy cleaning.
Health & Beauty Uses
- Gargle warm salt water for a sore throat. As a mouthwash, it will freshen breath.
- Soaking toothbrushes in salt water before use will help them last longer.
- Rinse a sore eye with mildly salted water.
- For bee stings, immediately wet the area then dab a little salt on it to relieve the pain.
- Soak a washcloth in a pint of hot water mixed with 1 tsp of salt then place under eyes to reduce puffiness. Be careful, it’s hot!
- Soak tired, aching feet in warm salt water. Rinse with cool water afterwards.
Laundry Uses
- To remove blood stains soak clothing in cold salty water then launder as normal.
- Colored curtains or washable rugs can be washed in salted water to brighten colors.
- To remove perspiration stains add 4 tablespoons of salt to 1 quart of hot water then sponge on stain until gone.
Miscellaneous Uses
- It is great as a deicer, sprinkle on sidewalks and driveways to melt ice and snow.
- To prevent frost on the inside of car windows rub a solution of 2 tsp of salt in 1 gallon of hot water, dry thoroughly.
