Combustion Pollutants
Gases and particles, which are pollutants, come from burning fuels and substances from our home appliances. Fuels include items such as kerosene, LP gas, wood, coal or fuel oil. Pollutants that come from burning these fuels include carbon monoxide, sulfer dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and the particles which can have toxic chemicals embedded in them.
Also, hydrocarbons and aldehydes can be produced can be produced by appliances. The combustion produces water vapor which results in wet surfaces and high levels of humidity. With this, the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew and dust mites are increased. This can develop in our kitchens, bathrooms, basements and even mattresses. Yuk!!
Combustion pollutants come from appliances that we all have which also include space-heaters, ovens, gas ranges, gas dryers, gas water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, and wood or coal burning stoves. Every home has at least one of these and more than likely several of them!
Many health problems can derive from combustion pollutants. Headaches, breathing problems, such as asthma, and even death can affect someone who is exposed to the pollutants.
What can you do?
- Improve ventilation in your home by opening windows to allow fresh outdoor air to come inside. Make sure exhaust fans for the bathrooms and over the stove are working properly.
- Be sure that dryers vent outside instead of inside a garage or laundry room.
- Install a whole house air purifier that can rid your home of 99% of the allergens.
Take action now by preventing anything from happening to your family as a result of combustion pollutants.
