The Benefits of Flax Seed
Flax Seed is one of nature's best plant sources of omega 3 fatty oils. It is a great source of fiber, perfect for someone with constipation problems, and a whole grain that can be added to many receipes without changing the flavor.
Flax seeds come in many forms. It can be purchased as raw seeds or ground in a mill. Eaten whole, they contain 11 grams of fiber per serving. In the ground mill form there is 4 grams of fiber per serving.
I prefer the ground form because it is so easy to incorporate in our daily meals. It can be sprinkled in cereals, yogurt (this is good), in chili, spaghetti sauce or any soup and stews. Add to salads for an extra nutty flavor. Flax can be substituted for other oils. When making something that requires oil, use the flax seed oil instead. Also, I like to add it to home-baked muffins, in pancakes or waffles and in oatmeal. Be creative and you will find many ways to include it.
Why is flax seed so good for you? Well, the answer is simple, it has so many health benefits. One is it's high amount of alpha linolenic acid, which is an omega 3 fatty acid. Omega 3's are known to help lower cholesterol and especially the the LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. Also, it can help lower blood pressure and triglycerides. The bottom line...it reduces the risk of a heart attack!
Researchers have found that flax seed oil helps to heal the inner lining of inflammed intestines. Those who suffer from Crohn's Disease, Colitis or even Irritable Bowel Disease can relate to this problem.
Flax seed is also rich in a phytoestrogen, a type of antioxidant, called lignan. According to recent studies, lignan shows promise in fighting tumors that form breast cancer. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture flax seeds supply 27 different compounds that help prevent cancer. This can have an enormously positive effect on your total health and well-being!
Ok, so let's look at some other crucial reasons to include flax in your daily diet:
