Dandruff... Dry, Flaky or Itchy Scalp
A dry, flaky or itchy scalp is otherwise known as dandruff. The treatment can be as simple as using Home Remedies with items you probably already have at home.
Dandruff is a form of
Seborrheic Eczema or dermatitis.
This skin condition is associated with loose, dry and flaky white or yellowish scales which come from the scalp. It is caused by a fat-eating, yeast-like fungus called malassezia. This sounds gross, but it lives on most people's scalps without causing a problem. Some do have problems though!
Usually dandruff runs in families. So, if one or both of your parents have or had it then more than likely you will too. My mom had trouble with it and she passed it on to me. Thanks, Mom!
Ok, ok...So what can you do about it. Sure, you can buy some of the expensive shampoos to help, but why not try some things at home first. Really, all you need is to add moisture to your dry scalp to get rid of the flakiness.
Now, let's look at those simple Home Remedies to help relieve your problem with dandruff:
- Try using thyme, which is believed to have medicinal powers. Boil 4 heaping teaspoons of dried thyme in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Be sure to strain the leaves from the liquid before cooling to a slightly warm temperature. Massage gently half of the liquid into damp, shampooed hair. Don't rinse. Towel dry and style as usual. Store the the leftover liquid in the refrigerator for another use.
-
Apple-Cider -Vinegar
is great for eliminating the dust-like flakiness falling from your scalp. Pour it over hair and let sit for about 15 minutes. Shampoo as normal. After a few days of use the dry, flaky skin will disappear.
- Pure virgin
olive oil
massaged into the scalp helps to loosen the dry
scales.
Be sure to brush vigorously with a natural-bristle hair brush. Warm (not hot)the oil in the microwave and apply it twice a week. Leave on for 20 minutes then shampoo and rinse thouroughly.
