Eat Blueberries For Your Memory and Health!

Blueberries are now considered one of the most healthiest fruits a person can eat. They are loaded with natural occurring antioxidants such as 14 mg. of Vitamin C and 0.8 mg. of Vitamin E for every cup. Along with that, they contain anthocyanins and phenolics that can also act as antioxidants.

Why are antioxidants so important? They are well known to to help protect the body from free radicals, which damage cells, and many diseases that are associated with the aging process such as memory loss.

According to the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center laboratory, discovered that feeding blueberries to laboratory rats slowed age-related loss in their mental capacity. This can mean a great deal for humans.

In one study, at the USDA lab, it was found that blueberry-fed mice performed better than their control group counterparts in motor behavioral learning and memory, with notable increase in exploratory behavior. When their brains were examined, it was found there was a marked decrease in oxidative stress in two regions of the brain and better retention of signal-transmitting neurons compared with the control mice.

The compound anthocyanin appears to be responsible for neuron protection in addition to adding the blue color. It could also be the key to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. As you can see it would be a smart and healthy move to include these blue delicasies in your daily diet!

How can you add them to your diet?

-Put some in your cereal; it's a healthy way to start your morning.

-I like to make a fresh fruit salad with bananas, apples, strawberries and blueberries. Stir a little orange juice in to keep the bananas and apples from turning brown, and you have a fresh healthy treat.

-Mix up a batch of hot muffins with lots of plump blueberries. Mmm good!

-Try putting them in the freezer. Pop 'em in your mouth for a nice refreshing, and healthy, snack.

-A cup of vanilla yogurt with the fresh berries makes for a wonderful snack.
