Got Problems with Ants?

If you have problems with ants in your house, like I do, then you have come to the right place.

I think our house was built on an ant mound. For years we have had the little varmits invade our kitchen and bathrooms. Sometimes they'd even show up in our living room.

ants, carpenter, pests It was driving me crazy. I bought different kinds of baits at the store trying to get rid of them all the while spending more and more money just to have them come back. I called pest control companies, but of course, they want to come every month. It helped some, but the ants still came back and I still had to pay the pest control company. Nothing accomplished.

One day I began to search on the internet for a homemade solution (my site has home remedies for many things) to my problem. I knew there had to be something I could use instead of all the baits that really didn’t work.

I soon discovered that boric acid is a natural insecticide. In fact that is what is used in a lot of the store bought ant baits and by pest control companies. Using boric acid by itself, though, doesn’t work real well. Ants like water and sugar (they have a “sweet tooth”), so you have to entice them.

Below are some Home Remedies, made with boric acid, that I have found work incredibly well:

The first one is the one I really like…I call it my peanut butter sandwich; it works great!

  • Take 3 parts (3 tsp) peanut butter and mix with 2 parts (2 tsp) jelly and 1 tblsp of boric acid. (Remember to keep this away from children) Mix this in a disposable container with a popsicle stick or plastic spoon that can be thrown away. Spread mixture on a piece of small piece of paper (I cut an 8x11 piece of printer paper in fourths) then roll up and secure with tape. Place the rolls where ever you see trails of ants.

For about 3 days you will see ants covering the rolls; this is what you want. They love the pbj sandwich! They take it back and share it, in the meantime the boric acid stuns their nervous system causing them to die along with their “friends”.

  • A mixture of 98% boric acid and 2% mint apple jelly can be used. Put in small containers around the house where you see trails.

  • Mix 2 tblsp of sugar and water with 1 tblsp of boric acid. Dip cotton balls in the mixture and place in small containers around trails. I save lids to old pill bottles, caps off of plastic food jars, etc. to use for this.

  • Molasses can be mixed with boric acid to make a "tasteful treat" for the pests. Again, be sure to keep this away from pets and children.

As I mentioned earlier, keep these mixtures away from children. Boric acid is toxic! Be sure to clean, thoroughly, all surfaces after use. I highly recommend a

disinfecting spray that is all natural and kills more germs than any other on the market.

    Additional Home Remedies:

    • Try sprinkling scented baby powder around anywhere you see a trail of ants. Soon you will see them squirm around and leave. Sprinkle more around the opening where they entered and soon they won't return.

    • Fill a squirt bottle with white vinegar and spray on countertops in the kitchen and bathroom or anywhere that you have seen ants. Ants hate the smell and will leave. It is nontoxic (really a disinfectant) and the smell will go away within minutes.

    • Also using a 50/50 mixture of

apple cider vinegar and water will do the trick, also. Pour in spray bottle and start spraying!

    • Cinnamon can be used to rid those little pesky insects. Just sprinkle around openings where you see them enter.

    • Black pepper is cheap and easy to use. Sprinkle it where you see a trail coming in and going out. You can use it around windowsills, in cabinets, on countertops and in drawers. The smell will keep them out.

    • According to a pest control specialist a person can mix equal parts of Windex and Ivory Soap in a spray bottle. Spray liberally where there's a problem.
